It's starting to become the war-cry of the politician. We must stop extremism, and the only way to do that is to put controls on the internet. As if people with a will to do ill to others couldn't think of a different way to communicate if the internet ceased to be an option for them.

America's Boris said "We're losing a lot of people because of the internet, we have to see Bill Gates and a lot of different people that really understand what's happening. We have to talk to them about, maybe in certain areas, closing that internet up in some ways. Somebody will say, 'Oh freedom of speech, freedom of speech.' These are foolish people."

Quite what the security services would say is impossible to know, but presumably they rely on these corners of the internet to gather intelligence about possible threats, and as such would prefer they aren't shut down. But the debate will no doubt rage on, with politicians like Trump using murders to justify taking away the freedom of the public.

Quite why Donald Trump would suggest Bill Gates be involved is anyone's guess. Presumably "The Donald" doesn't understand either that Bill Gates is no longer in charge of Microsoft, and that Microsoft isn't in charge of the internet. The strength of the web is that no one is in charge of it, and that's why it will continue to be as diverse as the humans who use it. Shutting bits of it down won't stop the extremists being extreme, and it won't prevent terrorism either.
