As long as you don't view it as a BMW 3 Series killer, you'll likely be happy with the 2016 Volvo S60 compact sedan. This review focuses specifically on the long-wheelbase Inscription edition, which has a hyper-efficient four-cylinder turbo engine and a comfortable backseat with tons of legroom. The other S60 trim lines are more snug in back, and the all-wheel drive version has notably poorer fuel efficiency. As long as you stick with the front-wheel drive model, the Volvo S60 is a solid compact car for long-distance trips, if not exactly Editors' Choice material.

How Much?
The loaded 2016 Volvo S60 T5 Drive-E Inscription Platinum I tested has a sticker price of $45,925 including the $940 shipping charge. The base S60 Inscription is $38,700 (not including shipping). That's for a 240-horsepower, front-wheel drive, extended wheelbase model.

The base S60 with standard wheelbase (the non-Inscription version) is $34,890 for front-wheel (FWD) and $36,390 for all-wheel drive (AWD). For performance, there is the S60 AWD R-Design for $46,740. For light-duty off-roading, there is the S60 T5 AWD Cross Country with 8 inches of ground clearance for $44,440. A wagon variant, the Volvo V60, is $36,890 with front-wheel drive and standard wheelbase, $41,940 as the AWD V60 Cross Country, and $46,470 as the V60 AWD R-Design. Volvo also sells a high-performance S60 AWD Polestar with an engine software upgrade and stouter suspension parts for $60,640.

What It Comes With
The base 2016 Volvo S60 comes standard with the Volvo City Safety low-speed forward collision warning/mitigation system and Sensus Connect telematics. It also has a 7-inch center stack display, voice input, Wi-Fi, eight-speaker audio, USB, Bluetooth for audio and phone (with support for the Volvo Sensus smartphone app), CD, HD and satellite radio, headlamp washers, an eight-way power driver's seat, a leather steering wheel, LED running lights, and a 60/40 folding rear seat with pass-through.
