You don't need an app to request a pickup from one of the most popular ride-sharing platforms anymore. TechCrunch reports that Uber now lets users in Arizona book trips by dialing a phone number. It's a new pilot program that aims to attract older adults who might not feel comfortable relying on an app to request a ride. Most users will continue entering their requests with the app, but there's no doubt the dial-in feature opens up Uber's network of drivers to people who might otherwise ignore its service. Getting a ride with Uber couldn't be any easier now, frankly.
By calling the 1-800 phone number, Uber will set up a chat between the user and a live agent. Uber decided against robot agents as users need to discuss details surrounding their location, destination, and type of vehicle necessary.
The dial-in feature requires a cellphone, however. You can't request a ride with a landline since Uber must notify the user of their driver's name, license plate, and estimated time of arrival. Uber does this through SMS-based text messages. During the trip, Uber will also push updates that a user might find valuable. It could take a few minutes whereas the Uber app requests a ride in seconds, but the convenience of calling up and speaking to a real person still appeals to a large number of people.
"We built 1-833-USE-UBER to expand access for anyone that prefers a little extra assistance when they want to use our services," Uber's Danielle Sheridan told The Verge. "There's always more to be done, but this feature brings the convenience of live support to our matching technology so everyday customers get the ride they want."
Ride options are identical to what the app has. Users can choose between UberX, Uber Comfort, Uber Black, Uber Black SUV, Uber Assist, and Uber WAV. Of course, it depends on the availability of each option in your area. Regardless of the type of ride, Uber will not charge additional fees for calling up to book.
Uber says it'll offer the dial-in feature to more users in the United States later this year. If you're located in Arizona, Uber's phone number to request a ride is 1-833-USE-UBER. Customers trying to get regular assistance, meanwhile, still need to go through the app. So only use the dial-in feature if you're traveling around Arizona or, in the coming months, another supported state.
