Pinterest has rolled out its first profile page redesign, which displays images and content more prominently.

The makeover gives the online bulletin board a more streamlined appearance. TheNextWeb compared the fresh look to that of Facebook's new profile pages.

Ben Silbermann, co-founder and CEO of Pinterest, hinted at today's changes during a recent appearance at SXSW. He promised "lots of exciting things," including an improved profile that would be "more beautiful, a snapshot of who you are."

If you've been paying attention to your Facebook ticker or Twitter feed for the past six months or so, you know the story – Pinterest has exploded in popularity. The revamped profile pages come after the site hit a pretty significant milestone in January - reached 11.7 million unique visitors. That means it passed the 10 million mark faster than any other standalone site in the country.

Pinterest has had a rather meteoric rise, but will it be more than just a passing trend? There is evidence that it is driving more referral traffic to other sites than Twitter. Additionally, recent numbers from comScore showed that people are spending less time on Google+ than they are on Pinterest. While they're averaging three minutes a month on Google+, they're spending about an hour and an half on Pinterest, comScore said.

There's room to grow, too. Not surprisingly, most of Pinterest's users are female. Stats from AppData show that 97 percent of the people who like Pinterest's Facebook page are women.

Pinterest is expected to launch mobile apps soon.
