Samsung this morning released a teaser video for its upcoming smartphone release, and the one-minute clip takes a shot at its top rival, Apple.

The video (below), a preview for what is expected to be the Samsung Galaxy S III, features sweeping shots of galaxies with text overlays that promise a life-changing device.

"Truly smart technology becomes a natural part of life," the video text reads. "Where a galaxy fits perfectly into your hand. Your view of the world grows ever wider. As you gain power to explore it freely and swiftly."

The video doesn't actually show the new device. But it ends with the line, "With technology that fits in this easily, you can now stand out from ... everyone else," before flashing a shot of sheep.

Apple naysayers have often referred to fanboys/girls as sheep because they will seemingly line up for and buy whatever Cupertino releases. Samsung already used this approach in a series of Galaxy smartphone commercials that made fun of Apple fans lining up for the latest iPhone, even though it doesn't have 4G or a large screen.

Last week, Samsung sent out invites for a May 3 event in London that will include the launch of the next device in its Galaxy lineup, likely the Galaxy S III. "Come and meet the next Galaxy," the invite reads. Over the weekend, Samsung released a countdown for this morning's teaser video.

Samsung first announced the Galaxy S II at MWC 2011, where PCMag got some hands-on time. It didn't hit the U.S. until September for Sprint and October for AT&T and T-Mobile. Verizon did not sign on for the Galaxy S II, opting instead of the Galaxy Nexus, the first smartphone with the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

By February, Samsung announced that it had sold 20 million Galaxy S II devices. Overall, the Galaxy lineup helped Samsung best Apple as the No. 1 smartphone maker in 2011, even with the launch of the iPhone 4S.

My Experience

I started out covering tech policy in DC for The National Journal, where my beat included state-level tech news and all the congressional hearings and FCC meetings I could handle. I later covered Wall Street trading tech before switching gears to consumer tech. I now lead PCMag's news coverage.

My Areas of Expertise

Getting my start in DC means I still have a soft spot for tech policy; Congressional hearings can sometimes be as entertaining as a Bravo reality show, for better or worse. But PCMag is all about the technology we use every day, as well as keeping an eye out for the trends that will shape the industry in the years ahead (or flop on arrival). I've covered the rise of social media, the iOS vs. Android wars, the cord-cutting revolution that's now left us with hefty streaming bills, and the effort to stuff artificial intelligence into every product you could imagine. This job has taken me to CES in Vegas (one too many times), IFA in Berlin, and MWC in Barcelona. I also drove a Tesla 1,000 miles out west as part of our Best Mobile Networks project. Of late, my focus is on our hard-working team of reporters at PCMag, guiding and editing their robust coverage.
