AT&T announced today that it will start offering the Windows Phone-based Samsung Focus 2 on May 20 for $49.99.

The smartphone is Samsung's first 4G LTE Windows Phone, and AT&T's third Windows Phone-based 4G LTE device, AT&T said. Consumers can snap it up for less than $50 with a two-year contract.

The Focus 2 features a 4-inch, Super AMOLED touch screen, a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera with HD 720p video capture, and a VGA front-facing camera. It runs a 1.4-GHz processor and Windows Phone 7.5. It is 10.98mm thick and weighs 4.3 ounces. It will be available in "glossy pure white."

The Focus 2 is the latest Samsung Focus device, behind the original Focus, the Focus Flash, and the Focus S - all of which were released on AT&T.

AT&T's 4G LTE network went live in late 2011, adding 15 markets last year. In January, it was added to the New York City metro area, Austin, Chapel Hill, Los Angeles, Oakland, Orlando, Phoenix, Raleigh, San Diego, San Francisco, and San Jose. Last month, it added St. Louis and Staten Island.

During a recent earnings call, Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO of AT&T Mobility, said the company's 4G LTE network now covers 35 markets. De la Vega said AT&T is on track to double its LTE coverage this year and "largely complete" its rollout by the end of 2013.

How well does AT&T's network perform? PCMag is currently on the road in cities across America testing out wireless carrier performance for our annual Fastest Mobile Networks series. To keep tabs on where we're testing, follow our drivers via @PCMPhones on Twitter.

AT&T made today's Focus 2 announcement, meanwhile, in conjunction with the CTIA Wireless trade show, which kicks off today in New Orleans. PCMag's lead mobile analyst, Sascha Segan, is there, so stay tuned for all the news.

My Experience

I started out covering tech policy in DC for The National Journal, where my beat included state-level tech news and all the congressional hearings and FCC meetings I could handle. I later covered Wall Street trading tech before switching gears to consumer tech. I now lead PCMag's news coverage.

My Areas of Expertise

Getting my start in DC means I still have a soft spot for tech policy; Congressional hearings can sometimes be as entertaining as a Bravo reality show, for better or worse. But PCMag is all about the technology we use every day, as well as keeping an eye out for the trends that will shape the industry in the years ahead (or flop on arrival). I've covered the rise of social media, the iOS vs. Android wars, the cord-cutting revolution that's now left us with hefty streaming bills, and the effort to stuff artificial intelligence into every product you could imagine. This job has taken me to CES in Vegas (one too many times), IFA in Berlin, and MWC in Barcelona. I also drove a Tesla 1,000 miles out west as part of our Best Mobile Networks project. Of late, my focus is on our hard-working team of reporters at PCMag, guiding and editing their robust coverage.
