Instagram's Web application is getting some more features.

Instagram users will now find that the browser-based application supports notifications, VentureBeat has confirmed. Users can click on a notifications drop-down box that shows an image's likes, people who've followed users, and more.

Instagram first rolled out Web profiles in 2012, but at the time you could only see your own feed. The following year, it added Instagram feeds to the Web before rolling out support for Web embeds. Last year, it added the option to search from the desktop.

That said, Instagram is still very much committed to mobile devices, where its features are best utilized. While the desktop version has gotten better over time, it's unlikely to get the full Instagram experience, like posting and editing photos.

Still, for those who want to keep up with their notifications on the sly at work or don't have their smartphone handy, the desktop app is now at least a little more useful.
