Google News is blowing out eight candles on its birthday cake this week. In less than a decade, the site has grown from one edition in English to 72 editions in 30 different languages.

In honor of this anniversary, Google News posted on its blog the top stories from each year that Google News has been in existence. It cited President Barack Obama's 2008 election as the biggest story in of the past eight years. In 2003, however, the biggest story was the U.S. invasion of Iraq, while 2005 was marked by Hurricane Katrina and the death of Michael Jackson dominated news coverage in 2009.

Now with 50,000 sources, the site has grown, adding video, local news, and newspaper archives, as well as customization and sharing options. After eight years and thousands of changes, it's easy to expect more to come.
