Forget everything you heard about Apple's iPad being a Kindle killer—for the moment, at least. Amazon's e-book business is doing gangbusters. The new Kindle is now the fastest-selling version of Amazon's e-book reader ever, the company said Wednesday.

The updated Kindle has sold more units in the first four weeks of its release than any of its predecessors in the same time period. More Kindles were ordered on Amazon and Amazon.co.uk in that timeframe than any other device, Amazon said.

The device was introduced earlier this month and Amazon sold out within a matter of days.

The e-book reader has become the most gifted product on the site, as well. It has been shipped to customers in 125 countries on six continents, including Mongolia and the Northern Mariana Islands, according to Amazon.

The news comes one month after Amazon announced that e-book sales on the Kindle now outpace hardcover sales.
