Tesla Motors is positioning its new "Summon" feature as life-saving technology.

Nextcar Bug artWith Summon—which lets you call your car from a garage or nearby spot—will help you avoid that awkward situation in which you mow someone down in a parking lot, Tesla said in a recent blog post.

"Areas immediately in front of, beside, or behind the car that rarely pose a threat in higher-speed operation on a roadway suddenly become home to pedestrians, pets, grocery carts, and clutter, often with disastrous consequences," the team said.

If a Tesla with Summon senses a pedestrian or object in its path, though, the vehicle will stop. In addition, the driver can stop the car by tapping on the Tesla app, keyfob, or any door handle.

Meanwhile, Summon will let you hop out of your car so your Tesla can self-park in a spot that would otherwise be too narrow for you to open your doors, the company said.

"Summon lays important groundwork for an increasingly autonomous world. One where the convenience and safety of transport vastly exceed what we are used to today," Teslas said. "Autopilot began this process on the highways. Summon begins it in your garage. As the technology advances, the complementary capabilities of each will converge."

Tesla's autonomous driving mode launched in October for Model S and Model X vehicles. It's not an entirely self-driving mode (drivers should keep their eyes on the road and hands on the steering wheel), but it's a start. As part of Tesla's broader autonomous driving features, it rolled out Summon last month as part of firmware version 7.1.
