We didn't see a larger iPad at last month's Apple event, but that doesn't mean the beefed-up tablet is off the table.

According to Japanese news site Macotakara, Cupertino is still prepping an iPad "Pro" to go up against business devices like Microsoft's Surface Pro 3 .

According to the site, the larger slate will feature a 12.2-inch display—smaller than the previously rumored 12.9-inch size.

Rumored iPad Pro specs, according to Macotakara, places the tablet's thickness between the iPhone 6's 6.9-millimeter and the 6 Plus's 7.1-millimeter bodies—thicker than the iPad Air 2's skinny 6.1-millimeter frame.

The Japanese news site also said the Pro will feature a set of speakers and microphones on the top and bottom of the device, similar to the iPad Air 2's stereo sound. It will also sport the same iSight camera, Lightning connector, and Touch ID sensor.

Early rumors said the larger iPad would debut in December. But last month, The Wall Street Journal suggested that plans for the super-sized device were pushed back to "early next year," amidst suppliers' struggle to keep up with iPhone demand.

Apple, meanwhile, has yet to confirm a larger iPad; the company just recently unveiled the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3, following September's launch of the next-gen iPhone 6 and 6 Plus .

A larger tablet could help boost iPad sales, which have slumped over the last year. Apple has said that its recent enterprise deal with IBM could help iPad sales, so it might make sense to add a larger, business-friendly tablet to its lineup.

In the big picture, however, it's not exactly gloom and doom for Cupertino. Apple has sold 237 million iPads since 2010, which is twice the number of iPhones distributed during their first four years on the market. During a recent earnings call, CEO Tim Cook said Apple views its iPad sales numbers as "a speed bump, not a huge issue."

Cupertino did not respond to PCMag's request for comment.
