Facebook on Thursday released a new iPhone app, but chances are you're not popular enough to use it.
Dubbed "Mentions," the new app is catered specifically for verified public figures such as actors, athletes, musicians, and government officials. The app essentially lets these people more easily manage their Facebook presence and engage with fans on the social network.
Those with access to the app can use it to track conversations about themselves, share updates, post photos and videos, and host live Q&As right from their phones.
"Nearly 800 million people are connected to public figures on Facebook, and interacting with athletes, musicians, actors and other influencers is an important part of their experience," Facebook Product Manager Allison Swope wrote in a blog post Wednesday. "From cheering on World Cup players to checking out updates from favorite celebrities, there are more than a billion interactions between public figures and their fans on Facebook every week."
Mentions is currently only available to those with verified pages in the U.S. Facebook said it plans to roll it out to more countries and verified profiles in the coming months. If you're the admin of a verified page, you can request access to Mentions if you'd like.
Meanwhile on the Facebook front, the social network also on Thursday confirmed that it is now testing a "Buy" button on ads and page posts. The button, aimed at helping companies "drive sales through Facebook in News Feed and on Pages," will let you purchase products directly from a business, without leaving Facebook.
