Best Buy reportedly started canceling BlackBerry PlayBook orders late last week, according to a report from Electronista.

Shoppers were complaining that their PlayBook orders were dropped, even in instances when they had already been charged and the order was complete, Electronista said. One store reported that "all" of its orders for the tablet had been canceled.

A Best Buy spokesperson confirmed to PCMag in a statement that it's sold out of PlayBooks.

"Starting Sunday November 20, Best Buy offered $300 instant savings to the BlackBerry PlayBook, reducing the price to $299.99 and $199.99 for the 32 GB and 16 GB, respectively. Customers have responded very positively to this short-term promotion available until Dec. 3 and, as a result, we are currently sold out of our inventory. We will have additional units available in the near future, at which time customers will be able to purchase the devices online at www.bestbuy.com."

RIM did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Checks on the Best Buy Web site show that the retailer is only offering refurbished PlayBooks and PlayBook accessories.

RIM and its retail partners have been trying to move the beleaguered PlayBook off store shelves with various discounts and offers. At the end of October, RIM kicked off a buy two, get one free promotion for business customers, which was supposed to end on Dec. 31.

Staples is still offering the PlayBook at $300 off the original price. OfficeMax is offering the same discount, but its Web site only lists the 16GB and 64GB models. Walmart has a similar discount for the tablet, but appears to only carry the 32GB and 64GB versions.

Are these retailers trying to clear out their PlayBook stock? Electronista pointed out that "Best Buy normally leaves products online if they're only temporarily sold out, however, raising questions of whether the chain plans to keep the PlayBook."

PlayBook discounts began at Best Buy in early September when the store knocked $150 off the price of the 64GB tablet. Later that month, Staples and Office Depot followed suit, reducing the price of all three versions of the 7-inch tablet by $100 and offering an additional $100 discount with a mail-in rebate.

Despite dismal sales and rampant speculation that RIM would axe the PlayBook completely, the company has insisted that it remains committed to the tablet.
