HTC on Monday provided a few more details on when its smartphones will get the latest version of Android, known as Ice Cream Sandwich, but it appears most users will have to wait until next year.

"HTC knows how excited our fans are to get their hands on Google's latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, so we're thrilled today to announce the first wave of HTC phones that will receive upgrades," the company said in a note on its Facebook page.

HTC said the recently announced HTC Vivid, available now, is currently upgradeable to Android 4.0, but it provided no other details. The device is one of the first smartphones to run on AT&T's 4G LTE network; PCMag pinged AT&T for more info.

In early 2012, meanwhile, Ice Cream Sandwich will be available for the HTC Sensation, HTC Sensation XL and HTC Sensation XE, as well as the HTC Rezound, HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO Design 4G, and HTC Amaze 4G. Exactly when that happens, however, will depend on the various carriers.

"We're continuing to assess our product portfolio, so stay tuned for more updates on device upgrades, timing and other details about HTC and Ice Cream Sandwich," HTC said.

Sprint, meanwhile, confirmed in a separate note that Ice Cream Sandwich will hit "a variety of devices" in early 2012, including the HTC EVO 3D and HTC EVO Design 4.

The first device to get Ice Cream Sandwich will be the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, which will debut on Verizon "later this year."

Motorola, meanwhile, has confirmed that it would bring ICS updates to smartphones six weeks after Google's public push.

My Experience

I started out covering tech policy in DC for The National Journal, where my beat included state-level tech news and all the congressional hearings and FCC meetings I could handle. I later covered Wall Street trading tech before switching gears to consumer tech. I now lead PCMag's news coverage.

My Areas of Expertise

Getting my start in DC means I still have a soft spot for tech policy; Congressional hearings can sometimes be as entertaining as a Bravo reality show, for better or worse. But PCMag is all about the technology we use every day, as well as keeping an eye out for the trends that will shape the industry in the years ahead (or flop on arrival). I've covered the rise of social media, the iOS vs. Android wars, the cord-cutting revolution that's now left us with hefty streaming bills, and the effort to stuff artificial intelligence into every product you could imagine. This job has taken me to CES in Vegas (one too many times), IFA in Berlin, and MWC in Barcelona. I also drove a Tesla 1,000 miles out west as part of our Best Mobile Networks project. Of late, my focus is on our hard-working team of reporters at PCMag, guiding and editing their robust coverage.
