Verizon Wireless confirmed late Friday that the Galaxy Nexus from Samsung will be arriving on its LTE network "later this year".
Not surprisingly, given the timing, Verizon did not announce a price. Users will have to sign up for at least a $39.99 calling plan and a $30 data plan, however.
Samsung had previously said that Verizon would be the first carrier to launch the phone. "Verizon will be offering the Galaxy Nexus with the initial release. Other carriers may support this device in the near future," a rep known as Samsung Janel responded to one user earlier this week.
When asked if Verizon would offer the Galaxy Nexus, however a Verizon spokeswoman said Wednesday that the company hadn't announced the phone and had no additional details. A Samsung rep said at the time that the company "has not confirmed U.S. availability or pricing."
The Galaxy Nexus model showed off in Hong Kong supported the technologies used by AT&T and T-Mobile. Samsung obviously designed an additional model that takes advantage of the CDMA and LTE networks used by Verizon, however.
The Galaxy Nexus sports a 4.65-inch HD sAMOLED touch-screen display with 1280-by-720 resolution. It's 8.94 millimeters thin with a 4.29-millimeter bezel and runs a 1.2-GHz, dual-core application processor. See the video below for more.
The phone is also the first to be announced with Android 4.0, AKA "Ice Cream Sandwich". Features of the new OS include an improved lock screen with facial-recognition capabilities, a faster camera, and Android Beam, a technology to "bump" contacts using Near Field Communications technology.
The two companies lifted the curtain on the OS affectionately known as Ice Cream Sandwich and the Galaxy Nexus smartphone that will be the first to run it in Hong Kong late Tuesday evening (promotional video below).
