Apple is preparing to launch an update to its retail store iOS app that will let shoppers pay via self-checkout for some in-store purchases.

According to a MacRumors report, customers will be able to pay for shelf-stocked items through the app, which will charge the purchase to their iTunes Store account. There’s no word as to what will happen after the customer has paid through the app. It’s possible they they’ll have to show an emailed receipt to an employee to prove that they’ve paid.

It reportedly only works for items available on the floor of Apple Stores, like accessories and cases. If shoppers want to buy bigger-ticket products like Macs, iPhones, iPods, or iPads, they’ll still need the assistance of an employee.

MacRumors also said that Apple will continue the expansion of the ship-to-store program it launched last week. This service allows customers to buy and pay for a product online and pick it up at the Apple Store of their choice. Apple started the program last week in three of its San Francisco stores and has since expanded it to include all 16 of its Bay Area locations and all four New York City stores. Apple said on its site that it’s coming soon to other U.S. Apple Stores.

Apple is also adding another option to online purchases that allows multiple items on a single transaction to be shipped to different addresses. MacRumors said this feature should be available in time for the holiday shopping season.

The new retail store app will reportedly roll out on November 3.
