Did you nab an HP TouchPad at the rock-bottom price of $99 or $149? Perhaps you're trying to decide which apps to install. A few more options just popped up, as HP is offering six of its paid apps for free for a limited time.

As detailed on the official HP Palm blog, the apps range from games to birdwatching and they are normally priced from $2 to $14.99. At this point, the promo codes only work in the U.S., but HP promised access for those in other countries soon. The U.S. access codes expire on August 31 at 11:59pm, but HP said a second six-pack of apps will be released in early September.

To access, click the app on your TouchPad, and enter the codes below. Credit-card purchasing must be enabled, though you won't be charged. The apps up for grabs include:

Glimpse: Normally $5, this app is intended to "amp up your TouchPad multitasking" via a customizable, split-screen interface. Code: injoj55410gavxv

Kung Fu Panda 2 Storybook: This app, normally $2.99, brings images and voice from the Kung Fu Panda 2 movie to the TouchPad. Code: eotss76676jjzqr

Big Boss: This game, reduced from $1.99, lets you create a "Boss," or gigantic monster, who you will use to defeat the heroes and wizards of WackyLands. Code: vfimk09918lngoz

SparkleHD: This is a TouchPad version of the popular desktop game, which has players saving Crowberry Woods from attack. Normally $4.99. Code: pweuq32135vrbhx

Camera for TouchPad: This app, usually $0.99, includes options for managing your photos and using them with other TouchPad apps.

Audubon Birds: For bird enthusiasts, this searchable, digital field guide to North American birds is reduced from $14.99. Code: jjiox66488ddnik.

In the wake of HP deciding to ditch its TouchPad tablet, the company as well as retailers like Best Buy and Barnes & Noble started offering the TouchPad at drastically reduced prices; $99 for the 16GB and $149 for the 32GB. A rush ensued; Best Buy is currently sold out, Barnes & Noble had to cancel some orders, and HP is waiting on the next shipment from its warehouse.

My Experience

I started out covering tech policy in DC for The National Journal, where my beat included state-level tech news and all the congressional hearings and FCC meetings I could handle. I later covered Wall Street trading tech before switching gears to consumer tech. I now lead PCMag's news coverage.

My Areas of Expertise

Getting my start in DC means I still have a soft spot for tech policy; Congressional hearings can sometimes be as entertaining as a Bravo reality show, for better or worse. But PCMag is all about the technology we use every day, as well as keeping an eye out for the trends that will shape the industry in the years ahead (or flop on arrival). I've covered the rise of social media, the iOS vs. Android wars, the cord-cutting revolution that's now left us with hefty streaming bills, and the effort to stuff artificial intelligence into every product you could imagine. This job has taken me to CES in Vegas (one too many times), IFA in Berlin, and MWC in Barcelona. I also drove a Tesla 1,000 miles out west as part of our Best Mobile Networks project. Of late, my focus is on our hard-working team of reporters at PCMag, guiding and editing their robust coverage.
