Apple fanboys, it might be time to start the countdown to the iPhone 5. According to MacRumors, Apple has a media event scheduled for September 7, where it might announce the fifth-gen smartphone.

MacRumors discovered the report by way of Kodawarisan, a Japanese site that correctly predicted the launch of the Mac mini in 2009.

Apple typically has a fall media event, but it's usually related to audio. At last year's event, which took place on September 1, Apple unveiled new versions of the iPod touch, iPod nano, and iPod shuffle. In both 2009 and 2008, Apple's fall event happened on September 9.

Apple's product update cycle tends to be relatively predictable, but it broke with tradition this year by not announcing a new iPhone at June's Worldwide Developer Conference.

The rumored September 7 event is unconfirmed, and don't expect Apple to comment until it sends out invitations for the event. But there isn't a consensus that the iPhone 5 will actually be released in September. Earlier this month, All Things D claimed the phone would make its debut in October.

After the MacRumors report broke, The Loop's Jim Dalrymple chimed in to say that according to his sources, the alleged September iPhone event is "not happening." However, it's still possible that Apple will have a September event but not announce the iPhone 5.

So what will the much-discussed iPhone 5 include? Recent rumors include: fully integrated voice control; a "baby iPhone" for emerging markets; a "radical" new shape; an iPod-like curved glass display; and an edge-to-edge screen; among others.
