Microsoft said Tuesday that it has started delivering the latest Windows Phone 7 update to the Samsung Focus and LG Quantum.

Updates for the HTC Surround are still being tested.

Like other Windows Phone 7 users, those with a Focus or Quantum will receive two updates, the first of which will be for a minor update first rolled out in February.

"Once you've installed that, you'll be ready for the March update, which includes copy and paste, improved Marketplace search, and faster app launching," Microsoft's Eric Hautala wrote in a blog post. "Your phone checks for new updates every three days, so be aware that the update notifications might not come right away—or arrive back to back."

Those who don't want to wait for the update to be pushed to their phone can check for it manually via the Zune software on their PC. Just plug the phone in via USB and click "update now." Once the February update is installed, you will have to unplug the phone and plug it back in to receive the March "cut and paste" update. Microsoft has a how-to guide on its Web site as well.

The update, known as "NoDo," started rolling out to the HTC HD7 and the Dell Venue Pro in March.

Microsoft has had a bit of a rough road when it comes to updates for Windows Phone 7 devices. It started with a minor February update, but that ran into problems, prompting Microsoft to temporarily suspend the update for Samsung phones. As a result, Microsoft pushed the "cut and paste" update to March.

To help customers keep tabs on when their phones will get the NoDo update, Microsoft set up a Web site that tracks the progress of specific models. For now, the HTC Surround is the only phone that has not received the update; the HTC Arrive launched with NoDo installed.

My Experience

I started out covering tech policy in DC for The National Journal, where my beat included state-level tech news and all the congressional hearings and FCC meetings I could handle. I later covered Wall Street trading tech before switching gears to consumer tech. I now lead PCMag's news coverage.

My Areas of Expertise

Getting my start in DC means I still have a soft spot for tech policy; Congressional hearings can sometimes be as entertaining as a Bravo reality show, for better or worse. But PCMag is all about the technology we use every day, as well as keeping an eye out for the trends that will shape the industry in the years ahead (or flop on arrival). I've covered the rise of social media, the iOS vs. Android wars, the cord-cutting revolution that's now left us with hefty streaming bills, and the effort to stuff artificial intelligence into every product you could imagine. This job has taken me to CES in Vegas (one too many times), IFA in Berlin, and MWC in Barcelona. I also drove a Tesla 1,000 miles out west as part of our Best Mobile Networks project. Of late, my focus is on our hard-working team of reporters at PCMag, guiding and editing their robust coverage.
