No, the apocalypse isn't here. But Twitter did experience some technical difficulties this afternoon, making the micro-blogging inaccessible for many users.

"Some users are currently experiencing errors," Twitter wrote on its status blog at about 3 p.m. Eastern. "We are working on fixing the issue."

About an hour later, Twitter said the issue had been resolved.

Not everyone was affected. HootSuite, TweetDeck, and Echofon all functioned normally on devices in the PCMag labs, as did Twitter's official app. The main site also loaded without issue on a handful of computers, but was down on most of the PCMag machines.

If you're one of those affected by the outage, you were probably met with the following message when trying to check your feed: "Something is technically wrong. Thanks for noticing – we're going to fix it up and have things back to normal soon."

The reason for the lapse in service has not been disclosed. When asked about the outage, a rep for Twitter pointed us to the aforementioned post on the Twitter status blog.

Twitter recently sent a message to developers that put a moratorium on the creation of third-party apps. The company said apps like Foursquare or Instagram are welcome to integrate Twitter into their services, however developers are barred from building third-party clients that mimic the standard Twitter experience.

This change in Twitter's policy is interesting, considering third-party apps were some of the only ways to access the site amid the outage.
