Angry Birds Rio

Rovio on Friday unveiled a new Angry Birds game, a partnership with 20th Century Fox known as "Angry Birds Rio."

The new game will be in app stores worldwide in March, Rovio announced via Twitter this afternoon. The game is being released in conjunction with the Fox movie "Rio," a cartoon that follows a macaw named Blu, who leaves his native Minnesota for Rio when he meets Jewel, the bird of his dreams; it will be in theaters starting April 15.

Rovio posted a 1:27-minute trailer (below) for "Angry Birds Rio" on YouTube.

It begins with the familiar birds being captured in their home turf and flown via helicopter to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. There, they are deposited in a dark cave, where a white macaw reveals that someone is offering $100,000 for the birds, which are dubbed an "exceptionally rare species." The birds are not going down without a fight, however, and manage to escape their cage - only to discover hundreds of other caged birds. Thus, the battle between the birds and macaws begins.

Recently, Rovio revealed that it has been working on an animated series. "We have been looking at that for quite a while, and that is definitely one of my personal big focus areas right now - to work on broadcast content for 'Angry Birds,'" said Rovio CEO Mikael Hed.

My Experience

I started out covering tech policy in DC for The National Journal, where my beat included state-level tech news and all the congressional hearings and FCC meetings I could handle. I later covered Wall Street trading tech before switching gears to consumer tech. I now lead PCMag's news coverage.

My Areas of Expertise

Getting my start in DC means I still have a soft spot for tech policy; Congressional hearings can sometimes be as entertaining as a Bravo reality show, for better or worse. But PCMag is all about the technology we use every day, as well as keeping an eye out for the trends that will shape the industry in the years ahead (or flop on arrival). I've covered the rise of social media, the iOS vs. Android wars, the cord-cutting revolution that's now left us with hefty streaming bills, and the effort to stuff artificial intelligence into every product you could imagine. This job has taken me to CES in Vegas (one too many times), IFA in Berlin, and MWC in Barcelona. I also drove a Tesla 1,000 miles out west as part of our Best Mobile Networks project. Of late, my focus is on our hard-working team of reporters at PCMag, guiding and editing their robust coverage.
