Mac App Store

One million apps have been downloaded from the Mac App Store within a day of its launch, Apple announced on Friday.

"We're amazed at the incredible response the Mac App Store is getting," Apple CEO Steve Jobs said in a statement.

"Developers have done a great job bringing apps to the store and users are loving how easy and fun the Mac App Store is."

How does this download rate compare to Apple's other digital content stores? When Apple launched the App Store in July 2008 for iOS software, it reached 10 million downloads within four days, according to Apple. Apple iTunes took a week to reach one million downloads back in 2003.

The web-based Mac App Store lets users download free or low-cost software optimized for their Mac desktops and contains more than 1,000 apps so far from the free Twitter For Mac app to the $4.99 Angry Birds For Mac.

Software developers are incentivized to develop Mac OS apps with a 70 percent cut of the sales revenue and free hosting, the statement added.
