Most Americans aren't planning on buying a 3D TV in the next 12 months, based on Nielsen's State of the Media report for 2010, which gives a broad look at device usage in U.S. in the last year.

The study analyzes the way people use a wide range of devices, including phones, televisions, DVD players, and other electronics. It revealed that Apple's iOS is the top smartphone platform on the market, but only by a hair. Apple iOS has 28.6 percent of the market, but RIM BlackBerry isn't far behind with 26.1 percent. Google Android is hot on the heels of both of these platforms with 25.8 percent.

This is further indication that Google's platform is gaining steam. On Monday, Nielsen reported that about 40 percent of those who purchased a smartphone in the last six months purchased an Android-based device. However, the top phone in the U.S. is the Apple iPhone 3GS.

Almost a third (31 percent) of U.S. mobile users have a smartphone, Nielsen also said. However, feature phones still reign supreme, capturing 69.1 percent of the mobile market. There are 228 million mobile phone users. Of these, 83.2 million use the Internet on their device and 66 percent send text messages. According to Nielsen, text messaging has drastically increased, but voice usage has remained fairly constant.

The study found that women both talk and text more than men. Women talk for an average of 818 minutes every month and send about 716 texts monthly, while men talk for an average of 640 minutes and send 555 texts monthly.

Nielsen said that on average, U.S. households have 2.5 TVS, and 31 percent of Americans have at least four televisions. While just two percent of those surveyed already own a 3D TV, 46 percent of people own an HDTV and an additional 10 percent said that they will likely buy one.

The report revealed that average Americans spend almost a day and a half watching television each week (35.6 hours). Kids watch about 10 hours less (25.8 hours a week) and adults over 65 spend about 13 hours more (48.9 hours) sitting in front of the boob tube weekly.
