AOL

Christmas came early for startup site About.me, a site that serves as a homepage for a person's online profiles. Less than a week after the year-old company went public, AOL bought it for an undisclosed amount.

"About.me is more than just the aggregation of social profiles, it allows people to easily express themselves in an increasingly noisy environment full of disparate social experiences," Brad Garlinhouse, president of AOL consumer applications, said in a statement. "Creating smart online identities for consumers can have an incredibly positive impact on AOL's content and advertising strategy as it gives us the ability to provide relevant and meaningful content to consumers. The team at about.me has built an incredibly compelling product and we look forward to having them join the team."

About.me is a map that lets a user direct others to their presence scattered across various online profiles like Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn. The page includes a short bio and a picture of the user, followed by links to their different pages. It also features an analytics tool that shows a user how many people are looking at their profile, where they come from, and what they're doing on the profile.

"AOL has an incredible vision for how content on the Internet is changing – and how they will help shape its evolution," said Tony Conrad, co-founder of About.me and founder of Pumpkinhead, Inc, which operates About.me.

In 2008, AOL bought Sphere Source, Inc. from Conrad. Additionally, AOL Ventures actually invested in About.me when it first started. On his blog, Conrad said that About.me will stay pretty much the same structurally. He and his team will join Garlinhouse's department at AOL.

AOL has made a series of acquisitions this year including TechCrunch, online video platform 5min Media, StudioNow, Thing Labs, and most recently digital advertising firm Pictela.
