John Lennon would have turned 70 on Saturday. To commemorate the day, Google is paying tribute to the former Beatle today with a video doodle on its homepage.

The doodle first showed up on Google's UK site, but is now live on Google.com as well, a Google spokeswoman confirmed.

Set to the iconic song "Imagine," the wispy seeds of a dandelion blow away to morph into a black and white animation of the word "Google." Lennon's signature glasses form the double o's in the word. The music legend was gunned down in New York City on Dec. 8, 1980.

"The old saying, 'A picture is worth a thousand words' still rings true, so I hope a moving picture will help me adequately—and simply—thank John for the memories," Mike Dutton, a Google doodler, wrote in a blog post.

The doodle video will remain on Google.com all day today and tomorrow, Dutton said.

It's not the first time Google has had an interactive doodle on its homepage this year. September saw the company's 12th birthday, marked by a simple cake drawing. Another innovative doodle came in conjunction with the inception of Google Instant. The logo was comprised of a group of colorful orbs that moved around the page when you hovered your mouse over them. This summer, to signify the 30th anniversary of Pac Man, the doodle also featured a full playable game.
