"Call of Duty: Black Ops" is about to make gamers feel even more like they're in the middle of the action on the front lines. Activision announced on Tuesday that its combat-themed game will also be available in 3D when it's released on Nov. 9.

"Development of stereoscopic 3D began as an R&D project, but once we saw what the technology brought to the 'Call of Duty' experience, what a great fit and how immersive it was, we knew that we had to develop it for 'Black Ops,'" Mark Lamia, Treyarch's studio head said in a statement. "Aiming down the sights of your weapons, flying in helicopters, rappelling down mountains, and moving through highly detailed environments are just some of the awesome experience you will have in 3D with "Black Ops.'"

Users must have a 3D-ready HDTV or a 3D computer complete with the necessary active shutter glasses in order to experience the highly anticipated game in this format. Although many users likely won't have 3D devices, Activision's decision represents a big step for the gaming industry; "Call of Duty" is one of the first big-name games to use this kind of technology.

The idea for the game itself represents a new angle. Players engage in guerilla warfare and covert ops in the middle of the wilderness in single and multiplayer formats. Of course, the game will include its hallmark Nazi zombies, as confirmed by Activision in August.

"Black Ops" will be available in 3D- and non-3D versions on the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and Windows PCs. It will also be available on the Nintendo Wii in the non-3D version.
