Apple purchased 160 acres of land in central Oregon, where it plans to build another data center, the San Francisco Chronicle is reporting.

Cupertino confirmed the news to KTVZ-TV in Bend, Ore. but would not share further details.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment from PCMag.

Documents filed with the county clerk's office show that Apple has code-named the project "Maverick."

The station said Apple paid Crook County $5.6 million for property in Prineville, where Facebook also has a data center. Amazon Web Services also opened a data center in Oregon, and Google has one in the state as well.

All six of Google's U.S. data centers earned some environmental and workplace safety certifications earlier this year. Besides Oregon, Google's data centers are spread out across the country, with facilities located in Iowa, Oklahoma, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.

Last year, Apple completed construction on a 500,000 square-foot, billion-dollar data center in rural North Carolina. This facility is presumed to have been built to support iCloud, but Apple hasn't confirmed that assumption. The center suddenly appeared on Google Earth over the summer, though Apple began work on the site about two years before.

Apple is also reportedly building a solar farm on a 171-acre property nearby to help power the giant data center, though details on this facility are scant.

As far as the new data center goes, there is no information about what Apple services it will handle, how big it will be, and when construction will begin.
