The Bottom Line

It's the best portable media player ever. It's possibly the most fun we've ever had with a handheld device. It browses the Web like a champ. But poor phone call performance and missing messaging options make us unwilling to recommend it as a phone.

Pros & Cons

    • Fun new interface for navigating multimedia.
    • Huge screen looks amazing.
    • Terrific Web browser.
    • Syncs well with PCs and Macs.
    • YouTube function is great.
    • Functions flow seamlessly into each other.
    • Built-in speaker for voice calling and music.
    • Poor business e-mail and PIM connectivity.
    • Bad audio quality on phone calls.
    • Tons of "GSM buzz" on nearby speakers.
    • Virtual keyboard hard to type on.
    • No phone functionality with iPod speaker docks.

This week British Telecom (BT), the world's oldest telecommunications company, launched a smartphone application that will automatically connect its Total Broadband customers to its free Wi-Fi hotspot network. BT has operations in over 170 countries and its wireless network is comprised of 4,000 Openzone Wi-Fi hotspots in the UK and 1.6 million BT hotspots worldwide in select airports, hotels and business lounges.

The app will also include a weekly updated mapping service for customers to find the nearest hotspot. BT Customers need only type in their e-mail and password into the application, which is currently available for both iPhone and Android devices and they will automatically be connected to a secure channel for each hotspot. For users concerned with battery drain, there is the option to turn off the automatic connection and opt for a prompt before sign-in.

Bonus: BT will give 50p to the BBC Children in Need charity for every application downloaded.
