Americans are streaming more than ever before while in quarantine. According to a survey conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Tubi, the average person has streamed 20 movies and binged four shows in the past two months. As a result, people are starting to run out of things to watch.

Over 52 percent of the 2,000 respondents said they streamed more than they would during the span of a normal summer. As for parents of younger children, 44 percent say their child is streaming more now than at the beginning of the pandemic. In fact, a third of parents surveyed said they relied on streaming to keep their children busy over the summer. (Story continues below infographic.)

Now people are in a tough spot, as 39 percent of the survey's respondents were struggling to find new content to stream. This has led to 35 percent of people trying new streaming services to find fresh content to watch. And although most streaming services have the added benefit of no ads, 37 percent of respondents said they would try an ad-supported service if it meant watching something new.

On top of a lack of content to stream, three in 10 respondents have reevaluated which services they subscribe to, thanks to financial difficulties brought about by the pandemic. This has resulted in 24 percent of respondents aged 18 to 34 canceling paid services in favor of free, ad-supported services. This is likely good news for free streaming services such as Tubi, Pluto TV, and Peacock.

Instead of switching to a free service, though, many have gotten even craftier when it comes to saving money. One in four respondents say they have started a free trial and canceled it before having to pay, something the average person has done three times.

Password sharing is also a useful tool for saving money, with 17 percent sharing passwords with friends and family. It's an especially popular method among young people: 38 percent of respondents 18 to 24 and 31 percent of respondents 25 to 34 employ this method.

My Experience

As PCMag's editor of how to content, I have to cover a wide variety of topics and also make our stories accessible to everyday users. Considering my history as a technical writer, copywriter, and all-around freelancer covering baseball, comics, and more at various outlets, I am used to making myself into an expert.

I believe tech corporations are bad, but you might as well know how to use technology in everyday life. Want more how to content delivered right to your inbox? Sign up for the tips and tricks newsletter that I curate twice a week.

The Technology I Use

My job as how-to guru means I use just about every gadget under the sun, so I can figure out how everything works. I work from a Lenovo ThinkPad running Windows 11, but also have a very large Dell Inspiron 17 3000 and Apple silicon MacBook. I also have a Google Pixel 6a for personal use and use a Galaxy Z Flip 4 for additional Samsung-related testing. For iOS coverage, an iPhone 13 mini works like a charm, though it's already becoming a little long in the tooth.

My desktop situation includes a dual monitor setup with a modest Acer monitor. I also use a Logitech mouse (who can use these ThinkPad trackpads) and a Havit keyboard (my first mechanical keyboard; I love it but my wife hates it!). I'm a recent convert from wired headphones; I have Anker Soundcore Liberty Air wireless earbuds for personal use and have taken to the Sennheiser HD 450BT headphones for work.

Whenever I have a second to myself, I'm probably gaming on my Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck, or Xbox Series S. I also still have a bunch of classic consoles lying around as well.
