Plex is increasing the cost of its Lifetime Plex Pass threefold starting July 1. Users can continue purchasing the pass at $249.99 until the deadline, after which the price will permanently increase to $749.99.
This is the second astronomical price hike for the lifetime plan in as many years. After keeping the cost unchanged for 10 years, Plex raised it from $119.99 to $249.99 in March 2025.
For those unaware, Plex is a media platform that lets you store and organize your personal movies, TV shows, music, and photos on a storage device running Plex Media Server software and stream them remotely from almost any device.
Streaming your personal library is free on the platform, as long as you're doing it from the same local network as the server. To access your library remotely, you’ll need a Plex Pass, which costs $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year.
The prices of those two plans remain unchanged, and Plex says it had briefly considered retiring the lifetime plan.
“We’ve considered eliminating the Lifetime Plex Pass in the past, given that recurring subscriptions help us sustain long-term development, but we know it’s still a valuable option for many,” Plex says in a blog post. “So, instead of retiring it, we’re keeping it available at a price that reflects the real, ongoing value of the software we’re committed to building and maintaining for years to come.”
Along with the price hike, Plex shared details about its future plans. Over time, it will improve its download feature and add support for server and library management, music and photo libraries, and playlist creation and editing in the mobile app. It also plans to add support for NFO metadata and IPv6 and improve its audio by boosting dialog and normalizing loudness.
The new price will take effect at 12:01 a.m. UTC on July 1. Act before then to lock in the platform's lifetime pass for $249.99.
