HBO Max Is the Latest Streaming Service to Roll Out a Price Hike

The price is going up $1 to $15.99 per month. Ironically, HBO Max say it's doing so to invest in more programming, even though it's been taking shows off the streaming service.

HBO Max is joining the other streaming services in raising prices. Starting today, HBO Max is raising the price for the ad-free plan to $15.99 per month, an increase from $14.99.

“Existing subscribers who are currently paying $14.99/month will see their monthly rate increase to $15.99 effective their next billing cycle on or after Saturday, February 11, 2023,” the streaming provider said. "This is the first time HBO Max has increased the price of a monthly subscription since launching in May 2020."

In a bit of irony, HBO Max is justifying the price increase by saying it’ll “invest in providing even more culture-defining programming and improving our customer experience for all users.” But it comes after HBO Max has been steadily removing the number of shows accessible on the service, sparking consumer complaints.

Just last month HBO Max removed Westworld, The Nevers, Raised by Wolves and several other TV series, explaining they’ll instead end up on free, ad-supported streaming services

However, the price hike occurs as parent company Warner Bros. Discovery prepares to merge the HBO Max platform with Discovery+ sometime this spring. So the new HBO Max should receive an influx of new content from its counterpart later this year, perhaps making it more worthwhile. For those on a budget, HBO Max offers an ad-supported plan for $9.99 a month.

Other streaming providers including Netflix, Disney+, and Apple TV+ have also instituted price increases in recent months. However, Netflix and Disney+ have tried to offset the price hikes by launching ad-supported tiers for their streaming services.

My Experience

I've been a journalist for over 15 years. I got my start as a schools and cities reporter in Kansas City and joined PCMag in 2017, where I cover satellite internet services, cybersecurity, PC hardware, and more. I'm currently based in San Francisco, but previously spent over five years in China, covering the country's technology sector.

Since 2020, I've covered the launch and explosive growth of SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service, writing 600+ stories on availability and feature launches, but also the regulatory battles over the expansion of satellite constellations, fights with rival providers like AST SpaceMobile and Amazon, and the effort to expand into satellite-based mobile service. I've combed through FCC filings for the latest news and driven to remote corners of California to test Starlink's cellular service.

I also cover cyber threats, from ransomware gangs to the emergence of AI-based malware. In 2024 and 2025, the FTC forced Avast to pay consumers $16.5 million for secretly harvesting and selling their personal information to third-party clients, as revealed in my joint investigation with Motherboard.

I also cover the PC graphics card market. Pandemic-era shortages led me to camp out in front of a Best Buy to get an RTX 3000. I'm now following how the AI-driven memory shortage is impacting the entire consumer electronics market. I'm always eager to learn more, so please jump in the comments with feedback and send me tips.
