Google Meet went down for tens of thousands of users on Monday.
Online outage tracker Downdetector.com showed a spike of about 14,000 complaints around 1:30 p.m. ET. Those who were impacted experienced "slow UI loads" and could not join meetings, Google confirmed on its status tracker.
(Credit: Downdetector.com)When I tried joining a video call on desktop at 1:30 p.m. ET, I was met with a black screen, with no ability to see any of the participants or information on the call, although I could hear them. I was able to join the call normally from my phone.
Around 2:30 p.m. ET, Google said, "Our engineers have identified the root cause and rolled back a recent change." An hour later, a spokesperson said, “Today, some users may have experienced a short disruption of service when loading Google Meet. Service has since been restored for any impacted users.”
If you're still having trouble, try Zoom or a different video conferencing system. If all else fails, there's always good ol' phone calls.
