A Slack outage is affecting the workplaces nationwide, leaving many unable to log in or send messages.

Slack first acknowledged the issue around 10:30am Eastern Time (ET), and is posting system-wide updates here, plus granular updates by functionality here.

The investigation is ongoing, and has uncovered a wide range of issues with "workflows, threads, sending messages, and API-related features." Slack seems to be working intermittently for some, while others are completely locked out.

"We’re still actively investigating this issue, but we don’t have any new information to share at this time," says Slack's most recent update at 1:34pm ET. "Thanks for sticking with us as we continue to work towards a fix. We’ll keep you posted as soon we have an update."

Slack is available on mobile and desktop, via app or browser. Thousands of people have reported service disruptions to Downdetector (owned by PCMag parent company Ziff Davis). About 60% say they are having issues with the app. The number of reports has steadily declined as Slack works to restore service.

Slack is one of the most ubiquitous workplace messaging platforms with nearly 40 million daily active users, according to DemandSage. More than 750,000 organizations use the messaging platform, including 77% of Fortune 100 companies.

The outage is likely significantly disrupting to day-to-day operations at these companies, though it may be a welcome break from messaging overload.

My Experience

As a news and features writer at PCMag, I cover the biggest tech trends that shape the way we live and work. I specialize in on-the-ground reporting, uncovering stories from the people who are at the center of change—whether that’s the CEO of a high-valued startup or an everyday person taking on Big Tech. I also cover daily tech news and breaking stories, contextualizing them so you get the full picture.

I came to journalism from a previous career working in Big Tech on the West Coast. That experience gave me an up-close view of how software works and how business strategies shift over time. Now that I have my master's in journalism from Northwestern University, I couple my insider knowledge and reporting chops to help answer the big question: Where is this all going?
