Now that it's football season, your old 1080p TV might not cut it anymore. If you're thinking of making the leap to 4K, now is a great time to go for it, because Walmart and Amazon are offering great deals on TCL's highly rated 5-series 4K Ultra HD Roku smart LED TVs.

There are four sizes to choose from, and all are available with free shipping, regardless of which retailer you choose.

Normally $1,199.99, the 65-inch model (TCL 65S517) is on sale at Walmart for 50 percent off, or just $599.99. That's an excellent price on a 65-inch 4K smart TV.

If that's too big, the 55-inch model (TCL 55S517), which regularly retails for $699.99, is available at both Walmart and Amazon right now for just $379.99, a 46 percent discount.

The 49-inch model (TCL 49S517) is sold out at Walmart, but still available at Amazon for just $299.99, or 50 percent off its list price.

Finally, the 43-inch model (TCL 43S517), which normally sells for $499.99, is marked down to just $259.99 at both Walmart and Amazon, a 48 percent discount.

The already budget-friendly TCL 5-series TVs earned "excellent" marks in PCMag's review.

They support ultra high definition (UHD, or 4K) video and can display high dynamic range (HDR) content in both HDR10 and Dolby Vision.

As we noted in our review, TCL's "5-series sits between the remarkably inexpensive 4-series and the impressively bright 6-series, and takes elements from both." We reviewed the 55-inch model and said it offers "surprisingly impressive color performance for the price." Apart from screen size, the other models offer identical features and we expect similar performance.

Want a second opinion? The 5-series line has an average rating of 4.2 out of 5 stars on Amazon with more than 1,000 customer reviews.

"This TV really exceeded my expectations considering the price," reviewer bmr_beth wrote. "For starters, the picture quality is excellent. The picture is really crisp and when you're watching HDR movies or TV shows, you'll really notice the difference! In addition, the design is really impressive! It has a matte metallic finish, thin bezel, and the depth is really, really thin."

My Experience

I'm PCMag's managing editor for consumer electronics, overseeing an experienced team of analysts covering smart home, home entertainment, wearables, fitness and health tech, and various other product categories. I have been with PCMag for more than 10 years, and in that time have written more than 6,000 articles and reviews for the site. I previously served as an analyst focused on smart home and wearable devices, and before that I was a reporter covering consumer tech news. I'm also a yoga instructor, and have been actively teaching group and private classes for nearly a decade.

Prior to joining PCMag, I was a reporter for SC Magazine, focusing on hackers and computer security. I earned a BS in journalism from West Virginia University, and started my career writing for newspapers in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

The Technology I Use

My little Florida beach bungalow is brimming with smart home tech. I have a smart speaker or display in every room, allowing me to control other connected devices by voice. The Nest Hub on my bedside table lets me set wake-up alarms, control my smart light bulbs, and set the temperature on my smart thermostat. I use the Amazon Echo Show 8 on my kitchen counter to browse recipes, reorder protein powder, check the weather, and watch the news while I do dishes.

Because I suffer from allergies, air purifiers are essential. My favorite model is the Dyson Purifier Cool TP07, which doubles as a fan and continuously sends indoor pollution data to its companion mobile app.

My pitbull Bradley sheds, so a good robot vacuum is a must. I currently use a premium Ecovacs Deebot that can both vacuum and mop, empty its own dustbin, and wash its own mop cloth.

For fitness, I like to mix up my routine with cycling, indoor rowing, running, and strength training in addition to yoga. I take classes on the Tonal 2 smart strength training machine, I row indoors on an Aviron machine, and track my beach runs with an Apple Watch while listening to music on my Apple AirPods Pro. On the weekends, I love riding e-bikes like the rugged, beach-friendly Aventon Aventure for fun and fitness.

My job involves a lot of virtual meetings, so a quality webcam, microphone, and ring light are important. I use the Jabra PanaCast 20 webcam, the Elgato Wave: 3 microphone, and a Yesker tripod ring light.

As for my preferred phone platform, I'm an iPhone person, but I've also extensively used Android for product testing.
