We've been hearing rumors about a giant foldable iPad for almost a year, but while earlier reports indicated a 2028 release, we might not see it until 2029.
As Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports, Apple has encountered engineering hurdles; the weight and cost of the device are reportedly three times those of the current iPad Pros. While the latest M5 iPad Pro starts at $1,000 and weighs about 1.28 pounds, the foldable iPad could cost $3,900 and weigh about 3.5 pounds. It was initially projected to cost $3,000.
Much of the increased cost has been attributed to the display panel. It's an 18-inch OLED screen developed by Samsung, which shows minimal creases at the fold, sources tell Gurman.
Unlike the rumored foldable iPhone, however, this product may not have an external display for quick glances. When folded, it resembles a 13-inch MacBook with an aluminum chassis. The device could resemble Huawei's MateBook Fold, which launched in May and is currently available only in China. The MateBook features an 18-inch display and costs $3,400.
The foldable iPhone, meanwhile, could arrive as early as next year for about $2,000, which is around the same price as its biggest potential competitor, the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
