We may be coming to the end of the PlayStation 4's life cycle, but Sony isn't done with its current gen console just yet. Next month, the DualShock 4 controller receives an optional upgrade in the form of a new attachment.

As the PlayStation.Blog reveals, the controller upgrade is called the DualShock 4 Back Button Attachment. Sony describes it as an attachment for "gamers of all skill levels who enjoy playing competitively," which has been designed to not interfere with how comfortable the controller is to hold.

The attachment clips on to the bottom of the DualShock 4 and positions two extra buttons on the back of the controller with a OLED display in the middle. It's then possible to map up to 16 different actions to the buttons, as well as allowing for tactile feedback. The display is meant to make it easy to see what button assignments have been made and are active.

Sony realizes we play lots of different games, so it included three different profiles plus the ability to "remap back button inputs on the fly." Those of you worried about the headphone jack can relax as Sony allowed for this with a headset pass-through to allow for connectivity.

From the images and video above, it looks as though even non-competitive gamers will appreciate this attachment due to how easy the new buttons are to reach. You also have to wonder if this will be a standard feature of the DualShock 5 next year, or will the attachment at least be available as an option from launch day?

The DualShock 4 Back Button Attachment will cost $29.99 when it launches on Jan. 23, which is half the cost of a DualShock 4. Sony is also keen to point out the attachment will be very useful for anyone playing PlayStation VR games.
