The Bottom Line

Saints Row 2 is Grand Theft Auto without the heart and soul, and that's not necessarily a bad thing.

If Grand Theft Auto IV left you hungry for some more sandbox-style violence and vehicular homicide, Saints Row 2 ($59.99 list) will probably fill that craving nicely. It doesn't have the heavy storyline or character development of a GTA game, but with multiple mini games—ranging from acting as a celebrity bodyguard by throwing overzealous fans into furniture, to faking police brutality for the cameras of a COPS-like TV show, to reducing local property values by riding shotgun in a sewage truck and spraying real estate developments with, er, well, you figure it out—who really needs the human-interest element? Saints Row 2 is pure sociopathic fun, with a host of customization elements to make your criminal avatar look exactly how you want him or her to look. Frustration may set in when you have to repeat some of the mini games in order to gain enough street cred to take on the main missions, or when you're trying to figure out how to steer a car and shoot a gun at the same time, but overall, this game will happily feed your darker side until you're stuffed.
