The premium edition of Malwarebytes for Mac scans for active malware and uses real-time detection to prevent infestation. It has a very good reputation, but hard data showing its effectiveness is scarce.

Main Window

The simple main window of Malwarebytes for Mac Premium focuses strongly on the main topic, malware protection. A big status indicator lets you know that real-time protection is active, and a big button launches a scan for active malware.

Speedy Scan

Malwarebytes doesn't attempt to scan the entire computer for static malware traces. Rather, it looks for evidence of active malware, and eliminates any threats it finds.

Quarantine Folder

Where some antivirus utilities make Quarantine a place to learn about found threats, Malwarebytes simply sticks quarantined items in a folder. Buttons in the main program display the folder or clear its contents.

Minimal Settings

There's almost nothing you need to configure in this utility, so its Preferences dialog is sparse. You can set it to ignore potentially unwanted programs, and you can set the interval for database updates up to 24 hours. That's about it.
