Ulysses (for Mac)

Ulysses is an app for writers, available on macOS, that supports Markdown language. Markdown is simply a way of applying style, such as bold and italic, to writing without the distraction of formatting menus.

You can customize Ulysses to appear in night mode (the dark theme with light text) and to show different icons for your pages, chapters, works, or however you decide to organize your writing.

In Focus Mode, your writing takes over the entire screen to help curb other on-screen distractions.

At any time, you can pull up a box of statistics about your work in progress, showing the number of words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, and pages. It also shows the amount of time you've spent on your current work.

Ulysses saves snapshots of your work, which you can browse using the timeline seen at the very bottom right corner of the screen. You can restore an older version of anything you write.

When you subscribe to Ulysses for Mac, you also get access to the Ulysses iOS app so that you can make notes and changes to your writing files nearly anytime and anywhere.

Ulysses' iOS app works on iPads as well as iPhones.

A goal-tracking feature lets you set an aim for how long you need certain parts of your work to be. A small color-coded circle then appears in the preview of the file to show whether you are under the goal, close, on target, or over the goal.
