Apple Logic Pro X (for Mac)

The new ChromaVerb, introduced in version 10.4, is a beautiful plug-in that delivers dozens of algorithmic reverb programs along with a colorful visual component, letting you see and shape the reverb tail.

In version 10.4, Apple thoughtfully added a super-sweet-sounding jazz kit (called SpeakEasy, pictured), complete with dark, washy cymbals, and two new drummers for jazz and roots-style playing.

The new Phat FX (pictured) and Step FX both add warmth, punch, and presence to your drum, bass, and synth tracks along with rhythmic elements; these plug-ins are derived from work with the Apple-owned Camel Audio.

Tube EQ contains several models that mirror famous Neve, API, and Pultec hardware, and each adds a distinctive character to the sound that you can't get from the usual parametric EQ.

At the top of each mixer channel strip, the built-in console EQ is still there; it offers eight bands, plus configurable Q settings and customizable low-pass and high-pass filters.

The Arrange page, as well as the rest of the main interface, still looks clean and modern.

The main console offers large faders, pan and other track controls, and as many inserts and sends as you need.

Alchemy is a killer synthesizer than began life as an expensive third-party plug-in from Camel Audio. It's free and bundled with Logic Pro X; it contains many types of synthesis and sophisticated filters.

The Touch Bar lets you set up a mock transport bar; you can also call up drum pads, a piano keyboard, and adjustable sliders for various tasks. You may no longer need a hardware control interface if you have this.

Apple's stock sound library continues to impress with its wide range of instruments, effects, and loops. Short of buying targeted, ultra-realistic third-party instruments for specialty sounds, you'll probably find everything you need right here.

Heading up the list of additions are Studio Strings and Studio Horns, both of which offer fine control of individual players and sound excellent in a mix context.

Apple has created a new articulation system for legato, staccato, bowing, pizz, and other kinds of playing that not only works here, but also with third-party virtual instruments from Native Instruments, East West, and more.

Retro Synth remains a good run-and-gun synth if you quickly need to grab an analog or FM digital sound from the 80s.

As before, there's a beautiful, Retina-compatible interface for each of Compressor's emulation models, and they all sounded amazing in testing.

Space Designer finally gets a much-needed UI refresh in 10.4 that's now compatible with Retina-class screens.
