Consumers are really digging the idea that Apple's next iPhone will have a larger screen.

According to a new survey from 451 Research's ChangeWave service, consumers are showing an "unprecedented level" of interest in the so-called iPhone 6, indicating Apple's next-generation smartphone could be an even bigger hit than the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s .

In the March survey of 4,109 primarily North American respondents, 40 percent said they were likely to buy the next iPhone once it goes on sale.

"This is the highest level of demand for an unannounced Apple model in a ChangeWave survey — stronger than we've seen in previous years for the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5 models prior to their announcements," Andy Golub of ChangeWave parent company 451 Research said in a statement. "Speculation over a larger screen iPhone is clearly striking a chord with consumers."

In comparison, just 26 percent of consumers polled before the iPhone 5s came out said they were at least somewhat likely to buy it while 33 percent saw themselves purchasing the iPhone 5 prior to its debut.

iPhone 6 Demand

In the latest survey, ChangeWave asked consumers how likely it was that they would buy a new iPhone 6 that had a larger screen, gesture control features, a faster processor, and updated iOS mobile operating system. Fourteen percent said they were "very likely" to purchase the handset and another 26 percent were "somewhat likely."

Reports about larger iPhones have been making the rounds for ages with Bloomberg tipping 4.7- and 5.5-inch devices in November and Japan's Nikkei Asian Review reiterating the rumor last month. If true, the new 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch screens will dwarf the current 4-inch Retina display iPhone 5s. Apple is expected to debut its next-gen iPhone this fall, though a recent report suggested that Apple is having some problems with the 5.5-inch model.

Meanwhile, ChangeWave's latest survey also indicated that phablet demand is going up. Nearly half (47 percent) of those planning to buy a smartphone over the next 90 days want a device with at least a 5-inch screen, up from 40 percent in December.

With the Galaxy S5 hitting stores tomorrow, demand for Samsung devices is also on the rise, ChangeWave found. Twenty-eight percent of those who plan to buy a smartphone in the next 90 days said they'll purchase a Samsung, a 9 point increase since December. Still, 42 percent of planned smartphone buyers in North America have their eyes on an iPhone.

My Experience

I'm PCMag's managing editor for consumer electronics, overseeing an experienced team of analysts covering smart home, home entertainment, wearables, fitness and health tech, and various other product categories. I have been with PCMag for more than 10 years, and in that time have written more than 6,000 articles and reviews for the site. I previously served as an analyst focused on smart home and wearable devices, and before that I was a reporter covering consumer tech news. I'm also a yoga instructor, and have been actively teaching group and private classes for nearly a decade.

Prior to joining PCMag, I was a reporter for SC Magazine, focusing on hackers and computer security. I earned a BS in journalism from West Virginia University, and started my career writing for newspapers in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

The Technology I Use

My little Florida beach bungalow is brimming with smart home tech. I have a smart speaker or display in every room, allowing me to control other connected devices by voice. The Nest Hub on my bedside table lets me set wake-up alarms, control my smart light bulbs, and set the temperature on my smart thermostat. I use the Amazon Echo Show 8 on my kitchen counter to browse recipes, reorder protein powder, check the weather, and watch the news while I do dishes.

Because I suffer from allergies, air purifiers are essential. My favorite model is the Dyson Purifier Cool TP07, which doubles as a fan and continuously sends indoor pollution data to its companion mobile app.

My pitbull Bradley sheds, so a good robot vacuum is a must. I currently use a premium Ecovacs Deebot that can both vacuum and mop, empty its own dustbin, and wash its own mop cloth.

For fitness, I like to mix up my routine with cycling, indoor rowing, running, and strength training in addition to yoga. I take classes on the Tonal 2 smart strength training machine, I row indoors on an Aviron machine, and track my beach runs with an Apple Watch while listening to music on my Apple AirPods Pro. On the weekends, I love riding e-bikes like the rugged, beach-friendly Aventon Aventure for fun and fitness.

My job involves a lot of virtual meetings, so a quality webcam, microphone, and ring light are important. I use the Jabra PanaCast 20 webcam, the Elgato Wave: 3 microphone, and a Yesker tripod ring light.

As for my preferred phone platform, I'm an iPhone person, but I've also extensively used Android for product testing.
