MSI is finally rolling out a fix for a Blue Screen of Death error that’s been appearing for the company’s motherboard customers after they load a Windows 11 update.

On Wednesday, the company began rolling out the fix through BIOS updates for several MSI 700 and 600 motherboards built for Intel processors. The patch promises to stamp out the error, which can trigger a PC to crash and list the warning “UNSUPPORTED_PROCESSOR.”

MSI agrees that the error isn’t the fault of Microsoft’s Windows 11 “KB5029351” update, which seemed to trigger the first reports of the problem last month. Instead, the company sourced the problem to a firmware issue involving the hybrid CPU architecture of certain Intel 13th generation Core processors.

MSI didn’t dive into details. But by working with Intel, the company determined that the Blue Screen of Death error will appear when an Intel 13th Generation Core i9 processor runs not just one, but three Windows updates that arrived last month: KB5029351 for Windows 11, a separate KB5029332 update for the OS, and KB5029331 for Windows 10.

In response, MSI says: “The new BIOS coming will include an update on the Intel CPU uCode which will prevent any more messages regarding the ‘UNSUPPORTED_PROCESSOR’ issues.” The same update will also work for both 13th generation Intel processors and “newer ones,” which are slated to be released soon. So the fix should address users running 13th generation Core i7 processors, who’ve also encountered the BSOD error.

“There will be more BIOS available to download on MSI’s official website for all Intel 700 and 600 Series models this week and all BIOS release will be available by the end of September,” the company added.

MSI’s statement goes on to include links to the individual motherboard models that can download the new BIOS. The company also created a video and instructions about how users can install the new BIOS version. The fix arrives after Microsoft temporarily halted rolling out the Windows KB5029351, KB5029332 and KB5029331 updates.

My Experience

I've been a journalist for over 15 years. I got my start as a schools and cities reporter in Kansas City and joined PCMag in 2017, where I cover satellite internet services, cybersecurity, PC hardware, and more. I'm currently based in San Francisco, but previously spent over five years in China, covering the country's technology sector.

Since 2020, I've covered the launch and explosive growth of SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service, writing 600+ stories on availability and feature launches, but also the regulatory battles over the expansion of satellite constellations, fights with rival providers like AST SpaceMobile and Amazon, and the effort to expand into satellite-based mobile service. I've combed through FCC filings for the latest news and driven to remote corners of California to test Starlink's cellular service.

I also cover cyber threats, from ransomware gangs to the emergence of AI-based malware. In 2024 and 2025, the FTC forced Avast to pay consumers $16.5 million for secretly harvesting and selling their personal information to third-party clients, as revealed in my joint investigation with Motherboard.

I also cover the PC graphics card market. Pandemic-era shortages led me to camp out in front of a Best Buy to get an RTX 3000. I'm now following how the AI-driven memory shortage is impacting the entire consumer electronics market. I'm always eager to learn more, so please jump in the comments with feedback and send me tips.
