Intel Demos 13th Gen Raptor Lake Chip Hitting 6GHz Out of the Box

Based on demo footage, it seems the chip—likely the upcoming Core i9-13900KS—can only achieve the 6GHz speeds on two performance cores in brief spurts for now.

Intel is providing a first look at an upcoming 13th Generation “Raptor Lake” Core processor that can hit 6GHz without any overclocking at all.

The company first mentioned the mysterious 6GHz CPU chip back in September while remaining mum on details. But on Tuesday, Intel finally demoed the processor in action in a video.

The clip confirms the processor can hit 5.98GHz speeds, using only a Corsair all-in-one cooler. “I’m not showing any tricks. This is all running out of box, factory default setting,” said Jason Xie, Intel’s gaming technical marketing lead.

But it seems the chip can only hit the near 6GHz speed over two performance cores on the 13th Generation Core processor, which likely contains at least eight performance cores, and another 16 efficiency cores. In addition, the chip can only hit 6GHz in short bursts that last a few seconds.

That’s to be expected since maintaining a 6GHz speed would eventually overheat the CPU. “A lot of factors come into play here, whether it’s the power budget, the thermals, or in some cases, where the software itself, Windows, may not be allocating to the right cores,” Xie said.

Still, the chip promises to take the crown as the fastest desktop chip, making it the world's first 6GHz CPU. In contrast, AMD’s latest chips can only hit a boost clock speed of 5.7GHz.

Meanwhile, Intel’s Core i9-13900k can hit boost clock speeds of 5.8GHz out of the box. (However, the chip can reach 9GHz if you have some liquid helium on hand to cool the CPU.)

Intel demoed the unnamed 6GHz chip on two motherboards—an Intel internal “reference validation platform” for testing purposes, and a Z790 motherboard from Asus that's currently on the market. Intel has yet to name the 6GHz processor, but rumors suggest the chip will be dubbed the Core i9-13900 KS. Xie said expect it to arrive soon.

My Experience

I've been a journalist for over 15 years. I got my start as a schools and cities reporter in Kansas City and joined PCMag in 2017, where I cover satellite internet services, cybersecurity, PC hardware, and more. I'm currently based in San Francisco, but previously spent over five years in China, covering the country's technology sector.

Since 2020, I've covered the launch and explosive growth of SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service, writing 600+ stories on availability and feature launches, but also the regulatory battles over the expansion of satellite constellations, fights with rival providers like AST SpaceMobile and Amazon, and the effort to expand into satellite-based mobile service. I've combed through FCC filings for the latest news and driven to remote corners of California to test Starlink's cellular service.

I also cover cyber threats, from ransomware gangs to the emergence of AI-based malware. In 2024 and 2025, the FTC forced Avast to pay consumers $16.5 million for secretly harvesting and selling their personal information to third-party clients, as revealed in my joint investigation with Motherboard.

I also cover the PC graphics card market. Pandemic-era shortages led me to camp out in front of a Best Buy to get an RTX 3000. I'm now following how the AI-driven memory shortage is impacting the entire consumer electronics market. I'm always eager to learn more, so please jump in the comments with feedback and send me tips.

The Best Tech I've Had:

  • My first video game console: a Nintendo Famicom
  • I loved my Sega Saturn despite PlayStation's popularity.
  • The iPod Video I received as a gift in college
  • Xbox 360 FTW
  • The Galaxy Nexus was the first smartphone I was proud to own.
  • The PC desktop I built in 2013, which still works to this day.
