One of the nice things about Macs is they come with magnetic chargers that break away and protect the computer from damage. But with USB-C now coming into vogue, that's no longer possible.

CES 2016 Bug ArtAt CES on Monday, Griffin showed off a new magnetic breakaway cable designed for computers with a USB-C connection. The accessory, which will cost $40 when it ships later this year, is designed to magnetically connect a power cord to a USB-C port. In the event the cord is ripped out or tripped over, the magnet will break away, leaving the computer safe and sound on the desk.

While Apple has made MagSafe magnetic connectors standard in its MacBook Pro line, its MacBook, which was unveiled last year, uses USB-C. In turn, it doesn't feature a MagSafe connection, potentially putting the device at risk.

According to Griffin, which makes a wide range of accessories, its BreakSafe Magnetic cable is designed to mitigate that risk. What's more, it can connect to the power cord that came with the computer, providing an additional six feet of length to the power cable.

In addition to Apple's MacBook, the BreakSafe Magnetic cable is also compatible with the Chromebook Pixel. The cable will be available in April.
