The Bottom Line

Adventures of Pip is a fun, ambitious action-platformer with an original concept, but it has a frustrating power-up system and sparse (though excellent) music.

Pros & Cons

    • Fun gameplay.
    • Charming, colorful world.
    • Interesting story.
    • Excellent music.
    • A hassle to buy not-very-helpful power-ups, weapons, and buffs.
    • Great music is limited to a few tracks.

Tic Toc Games's Adventures of Pip ($14.99) is a side-scrolling action platformer that's based on an interesting premise: evolving and devolving a pixel-based hero between his 1-bit and 16-bit forms to fight through level after level of goons and bosses. The unique premise, rich environments, and fun gameplay combine to form a PC game with a lot of heart and charm, despite a few minor gripes. I reviewed Adventures of Pip on PC, but it's also available on Wii U. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions are slated to arrive later this summer.

Sweet and Simple
Adventures of Pip is a simple game that shies away from cinematic storytelling, instead pulling you into its world with its unique setting and gameplay. You control Pip, a 1-bit hero living in a 32-bit world on a quest to save the Pixel Kingdom and its princess from the evil Queen DeRezia.

Pip is a silent protagonist, so it's up to other characters and their witty banter to drive the plot. The story's quite entertaining, too—particularly when it delves into the social interactions between high- and low-resolution citizens.
