The Bottom Line

Given the series' stellar pedigree, Civilization V would have to work feverishly to be disappointing. But this highly simplified chapter in the Civ saga tries its best.

Pros & Cons

    • Addictive as ever.
    • Some excellent game-play additions.
    • Feels far more simplistic and less rich than previous Civilization titles.
    • Changes to major mechanics will require significant readjustment time for veterans.

Civilization V Specs

ESRB Rating: E for Everybody
Genre: Simulation
Platform: PC

Modding and game expansion have been major features of the Civilization series of computer games since its inception 20 years ago. The latest chapter in the game, Civilization V, is continuing that tradition, and its publisher, 2K Games, announced today two new downloadable expansions for the popular strategy game.

The first is Civilization and Scenario Pack: Polynesia, available for $4.99, which adds the Polynesian civilization and its ruler, Kamehameha, into the mix. Added as part of the pack is the "Paradise Found" scenario, in which players assume control of any of four Polynesian kingdoms as they struggle to become the dominant culture of the region.

Per a 2K press release, "All-new technology and social policy trees unlock powerful advantages to players, including the fearsome Maori Warrior and the enigmatic Moai. Special changes to the game rules allow players to build expansive kingdoms quickly without impeding their cultural growth, but the seas of the Pacific are huge and land is at a premium among the atolls and islands."

There will also be three new multiplayer maps available for Civilization V. Included in the pack are Skirmish, for one-on-one duels; Ring, which lets you face enemies on your flanks and sail across the middle of the world; and Ancient Lake, a setting based on an inland sea.

Both the Civilization and Scenario Pack: Polynesia and the free Map Pack will be available via the Steam distribution service beginning Thursday, March 3.
