Pros & Cons

    • Fun hack-and-slash action.
    • Rocking soundtrack.
    • Tons of characters, weapons, and combos to unlock and master.
    • Problems running on Windows 8.
    • Visually similar to PS3 version.
    • Lacks content from console DLC.
    • No online multiplayer despite what Steam says.

This could be the dawn of a new age. An age where Japanese game publishers aren't afraid to release PC versions of their console games. Hot on the heels of Capcom's Resident Evil 4 Ultimate HD and Namco Bandai's Dark Souls II£49 at Amazon UK, we now have Tecmo Koei's Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition ($49.99)SEE IT, which is available from Steam. However, all is not right with this PC port. It lacks some major benefits the PlayStation 4 £306.98 at Amazon UK and PlayStation Vita £149.99 at Amazon UK versions enjoy, such as superior graphics, cross-save support, cross-play support, and an online multiplayer mode. It still manages to be a fun time if you're willing to forgive its shortcomings, but, otherwise, this is a hard sell and another example of the PC port as an afterthought.

Hack and Slash
Dynasty Warriors' premise is simple. As one of many hyper-stylized versions of Chinese historical figures, you wreak havoc on the battlefield by slashing, bashing, and Hulk-smashing through hundreds of enemy soldiers. The goal is to defeat enough of the enemy to turn the tide of battle.

It's completely over the top, and it's tons of fun—especially with a second player in tow. A large selection of characters, weapons, and their accompanying combo attacks keep things interesting from battle to battle. As in Capcom's Monster Hunter games, your move set is tied to the weapons you equip rather than the character you select, though some weapons are better suited to certain characters than others. It's great to experiment. You can slice and dice enemies with a pair of axes in one mission, then surf over opposing soldiers on top of a small boat the next, then summon ghostly archers to your side with a scroll in the next—all to the tune of a hard rock and heavy metal soundtrack. Dispatch more enemies and you gain more weapons and abilities.
