Price: Affordable Options vs. Premium Features

RoboForm is less expensive than Keeper and even offers a free service plan, though it's limited to one device. Keeper doesn't offer free service plans. You still get plenty of time to try out Keeper's apps with a 30-day trial, though. RoboForm also offers 30-day trials for paid accounts.

As for plan pricing, RoboForm's Premium tier is $29.88 per year. A Family subscription is $47.76 per year and includes five premium accounts. Data breach report monitoring is included with RoboForm paid subscriptions.

To compare, Keeper starts at $39.99 annually for individual plans, while a Family subscription is $84.99 and includes five additional vaults, 10GB of file storage, and admin-like permissions to manage shared folders. Keeper also offers paid add-on features, such as BreachWatch, which is a dark web monitor. Individual subscribers will pay an additional $24.99 annually for the service, and that price increases to $49.99 for Family plans.

Winner: RoboForm

Data Storage Options: Cloud and Local Vault Flexibility

Both companies offer options for customers to store their credentials locally, which is great. After all, we trust companies with tons of incredibly private data online. What happens if they lose our passwords or other information in a data breach? To stave off that concern, I like to recommend password managers that offer vault storage options beyond the cloud.

With RoboForm, you can keep your data on the company's cloud servers or on your device or computer. To enable local storage, turn off the Automatic Sync feature in the RoboForm app.

Keeper has a similar function called Offline Mode. When you turn this on, Keeper creates a local version of your encrypted vault on your device, locked behind a layer of multi-factor authentication. Enable this option by logging in to your vault, then go to Settings > Allow Offline Access.

Appearance and Functionality: Sleek Design Meets Usability

Keeper wins this round because, in addition to basic password management, it offers sleek, modern-looking apps and lets you store file attachments in your vault. Keeper's color scheme is customizable, and you can change the browser extension's layout. Keeper's accessibility features let you change text sizes, notification window appearance, and you can even zoom in on portions of the app window. The only downside? During my last evaluation, Keeper's Chrome browser extension didn't always fill out forms on websites, which was a little frustrating.

RoboForm also offers very easy-to-use apps, and the form-filling functionality was smooth during my last test. That said, you can't store file attachments in your RoboForm vault, and sharing passwords via folders isn't as easy as Keeper's One-Time Share feature, which lets customers send passwords via AirDrop, QR codes, or SMS to people who aren't on the same platform.

Included Extras: Bonus Features That Boost Security

RoboForm takes this category because its subscription includes password syncing across all your devices, data breach monitoring for up to five email addresses, emergency access, sharing options, and customer support via email, live chat, and phone. The breach monitoring and emergency access are big benefits here, as these features help you keep on top of your data security and designate someone to inherit access to your accounts when you die or are otherwise incapacitated.

Keeper also offers emergency access, sharing options, and customer support via a contact form on the website. As mentioned above, BreachWatch, Keeper's dark web monitoring service, costs an additional $19.99 per year, which isn't ideal.

Winner: RoboForm

Business Plans: From Small Teams to Enterprise Solutions

RoboForm's Business edition costs $39.96 per year per user. The oft-discounted plan includes activity logs, dark web monitoring and alerts, password hygiene reports, password sharing, role-based access control, single sign-on (SSO) integration, customizable security policies, and other business-focused features. RoboForm also offers enterprise-level password management for large businesses. Both plans include a dedicated account manager and priority customer support.

Keeper wins this category because it offers a much wider range of service plans for business customers. For example, Keeper's Business Starter plan costs $24 annually per employee and supports up to 10 employee accounts, while Keeper's Business tier costs $45 annually per employee and adds administration rights-sharing options. The Enterprise version of Keeper costs $60 per employee annually and adds SCIM and command-line provisioning, admin-sharing tools, Active Directory and LDAP syncing, authentication via Duo or RSA security keys, SSO, and developer APIs. Keeper's solution for security administrators is the Privileged Access Manager, and it costs $1,020 annually per user. This product includes all Enterprise-tier features, adds access to Keeper AI, generates compliance reports and alerts, and includes SIEM integration.

My Experience

I review privacy tools like hardware security keys, password managers, private messaging apps, and ad-blocking software. I also report on online scams and offer advice to families and individuals about staying safe on the internet. Before joining PCMag, I wrote about tech and video games for CNN, Fanbyte, Mashable, The New York Times, and TechRadar. I also worked at CNN International, where I did field producing and reporting on sports that are popular with worldwide audiences.

In addition to the categories below, I exclusively cover ad blockers, authenticator apps, hardware security keys, and private messaging apps.

The Technology I Use

I like testing new software for work, but I'm less "plugged in" to the internet than I used to be. I tend to read app privacy policies to see what kind of data companies collect, and as a result of those findings, I don't use many mobile apps. In a similar vein, I was an early adopter of many social media platforms, but now I’m just an infrequent Reddit lurker.

I'm a gear junkie. I split my work time between a 2021 Apple MacBook Pro and a Lenovo ThinkPad. I shoot most of my videos for PCMag using a Canon M50, a Sony A7iii, and a Sony a6000. I edit videos using Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro.

I write all of my words for PCMag either in the MS Notepad app on my ThinkPad or the Notes app on my iPhone 12 mini. If I'm traveling and working, I use my iPad to write short articles or take notes.

My dad built me my first computer sometime in the late '90s, and I used it for reading Encyclopedia Britannica and writing Sailor Moon fan fiction. My first phone was the ubiquitous Nokia candy bar.
