Games consoles age quickly after release and it's not long before PCs pull ahead in the performance department. And the larger the performance gap, the more capable PCs become of emulating a console.

Nintendo's Wii U hardware wasn't exactly cutting edge when it launched, and so less than three weeks after launch, Zelda: Breath of the Wild is being emulated well on a PC running Windows.

The emulator being using is a "highly experimental" piece of software called Cemu. The developers managed to get Breath of the Wild booting in Cemu in the first week after launch, but, according to PCGamer, two weeks on using the latest version of Cemu (v1.7.4) and they have the game running, at least in parts, at 30fps.

Here's the latest version of the game running in Cemu:

Cemu is funded through Patreon, with over 5,000 patrons donating $22,029 every month to keep improving the emulation software. In return, they gain access to the latest versions of Cemu early. Version 1.7.4 will be available to patrons on April 2, with public availability scheduled for April 9.

Breath of the Wild was Nintendo's last game for the Wii U and it pushes the hardware to its limit, and past it in some instances. The game can regularly drop down to 20fps. With the level of funding Cemu receives coupled with major progress in mere weeks to get the game emulating well, it seems likely we'll have a Wii U emulator capable of playing any title near perfectly before long. And lets not forget the progress the Dolphin emulator is making.

It may even end up being the case that Zelda on Cemu is the best version, even compared to the Nintendo Switch.
