The Bottom Line

If you've got time, then this game provides a fun way to spend it, but don't think you'll get far with a couple minutes here and there. The game's appeal comes from creating your own virtual life, and it can quickly consume your real one.

Fans of previous Animal Crossing games will be either disappointed by the lack of change in the new City Folk edition for Wii or thrilled by it. The game is still extremely cute, and it still sucks you in for hours at a time, but it's pretty much the same game as previous entries on the GameCube and Nintendo DS. Animal Crossing is a simulation video game which allows you to create a life within the Animal Crossing world. You befriend your neighbors, work, decorate your house, buy clothes, go fishing, and explore the city. This isn't the type of game that gives you points, and there's no wrong or right way to play. You choose how you want your character to live and what it does.

Animal Crossing works in real time, so if you're playing at 2 a.m., it will be dark in your Animal Crossing world. Since time and seasons pass as they do in the real world, you can celebrate holidays in both worlds, and there's always something different happening. There are a few new characters, as well as new items to collect and buy. If you have a Nintendo DS, you can transfer your character from Animal Crossing: Wild World to City Folk, and also use it to visit other City Folk. Animal Crossing also works with Wii Speak (sold separately), which lets you chat in real time with other players on up to three Wii consoles.
